Seven months ago our family received devastating news that our daughter, mother, wife and sister Deb was diagnosed with a highly malignant cancer (Sarcoma). The tumor is aggressive and has grown to large to be surgically removed. Sarcomas as a rule are difficult to treat and generally do not respond well to chemotherapy.
After 6 rounds, the chemotherapy was unsuccessful and the cancer had in fact spread into her liver. We have explored all of our options and have asked for opinions from experts who have guided us to our only other choice. To revisit the option of a liver transplant.
Deb has been evaluated by the team of doctors at Toronto General Hospital, who have explained that her tumor is extremely unusual and are unable to provide her with any odds. A liver transplant is Deb’s only real hope.
We further learned that in Deb’s case a live liver transplant will be the only option for a success. Not only is the list for a liver donor incredibly long in Canada, Deb does not in fact qualify for a postpartum donor. Toronto is at the forefront of performing live liver transplants, and Deb has been accepted, as long as there is a suitable donor. With this, we are asking someone to take a risk in order to help Deb.
Here are the basic criteria and instruction on how to register to donate should you choose to do so:
Her donor must be in premium health, must not be of the age of her parents (ie. between 18- 60), must not have had cancer or suffer from any serious health ailments, must have type O blood (Debra is O+) and must not be immediately post postpartum.
To consider becoming a donor, you must register with Toronto General Hospital. They have an extremely thorough process of working with donors that is very much removed from me and from the transplant team, to ensure that the decision is not biased by the needs of the recipient. There is an extensive health assessment done (on paper) by each volunteer. Should there be several volunteers the team will then chose 1 or 2 candidates that they feel are the best fit. The candidate would then go through further assessment inclusive of a CT scan of their liver and for compatibility and counseling on the risks of the operation and risk/benefits fir the recipient.
The surgery itself is a major surgery and comes with its own inherit risks to the donor. While Toronto General has not lost a live donor to date, they will explain to any volunteer all the risks that come with such an operation. During the surgery itself, the transplant surgeon (Dr. Ian McGilvery should you want to google him) would remove half of the donors liver. The liver is a remarkable organ in that it will regenerate to 90% of its complete size within 3 months. The surgery would be in Toronto and would entail 5-7 days in the hospital barring no complications and close to 6-8 weeks for a full recovery.
If after serious consideration you are inclined to take the next step, you can visit www.uhn.on.ca/Focus_of_Care/MOT. Once on the site you click on “living Donor Donation” and then follow the instructions under “Becoming a Living Donor”. Alternatively, you can contact the Living Donor Liver Transplant Office at 416.340.4800 ext. 6581 and tell them you would like to register for Debra Karby.
While payment for an organ is illegal, we are currently investigating the legal parameters regarding coverage of out-of-pocket expenses and loss of income. We do not want anyone’s decision to cause financial burden for them or their family. The Transplant Center here in TO will provide us with more details in the coming week.
We want to thank you for reading this, for considering what we are asking and for sending this to others.
North Toronto has always been one of Toronto’s most popular neighbourhoods. This year has been no exception as seventy-three houses and seventy-four condominiums have already sold ahead of what is expected to be a busy fall market and last quarter of the year. Mark Arnstein, sales representative, RE/MAX Hallmark, Ltd., Brokerage; is literally wired into this market with his popular website northtorontoliving.tv. Arnstein tells TorontoNeighbourhoodGuide.com that: “It is becoming a bit more of a balanced market in North Toronto, but still a little more of a Seller’s market.
The resale market for houses in North Toronto is still a tight and competitive market with very little inventory as families look to put down roots and stay for awhile. The lack of supply and constant demand for houses in this neighbourhood accounts for an average list to sale price ratio of 105%, one of the highest in the city. And you better act quick when one of these houses does come on the market as the average North Toronto home sells after just 11 days on the market. Semi-detached houses start in the $680,000 range and detached houses start around $750,000. With prices steadily climbing in this neighbourhood it is not surprising that 29 houses have already sold for over $1 million dollars this year. Arnstein points out the highest priced homes are “New homes featuring 4 bedrooms with high end finishings.”
A condominium purchase provides a more affordable entry into this uptown neighbourhood. The average North Toronto condominium unit sells for $547,000. One bedroom unit prices start at $350,000 and two bedroom units start at $425,000. The average list to sale price ratio for a North Toronto condo is 100%, with an average of just 22 days on the market. Arnstein offers the following advice to both condo and house buyers, “make sure you have your mortgage pre-approval in place and be ready to make a quick decision. Be sure to use an agent who knows North Toronto. That is most important in a successful home search.”
North Toronto is growing. New condo and town-homes are sprouting up everywhere and there is no shortage of buyers. This does not surprise Arnstein who points out the following North Toronto neighbourhood attributes. “The schools are absolutely amazing, there is a fantastic sense of community, great parks, shopping, restaurants and easy subway access.” What more can you ask for. North Toronto has it all.

Do you have junk in your garage, basement, closet, shed, or just about anywhere it shouldn’t be? You know, the stuff that you really haven’t touched in years? The stuff that you’ve been meaning to get rid of? The stuff that is costing you money?
Costing money? Well, maybe not on a regular basis but certainly from lost utility. Think about it. You paid how much for your home? How much did you pay per square foot? How much is that space worth today? $200? $300? More?
By just hanging on to that 3 year old bag of no longer good soil it has cost you that amount. And those old shelves you meant to get rid of? And what about those old skis/boots/hockey equipment/bike/broken chair/old patio furniture? How much has the lost utility cost you? When was the last time you actually parked your car in your garage?
In this video, Mark meets up with his old buddy, Gareth Roberts, and talks about getting ready for winter by clearing out your junk and utilizing your space better. Gareth runs North Toronto’s locally owned and operated Just Junk. They are a crew of extremely professional, personable, efficient junk remover and organizer extraordinaires. They’ll take almost everything (no “poisons” or paint but for that you can call 311 to recycle/remove) and they do it with the utmost in customer service and satisfaction.
Mark Arnstein held a Spring Colouring Contest for the kids of North Toronto. These are the winners. While there can only be three grand prize winners Menchies Frozen Yogurt provided all the entrants with gift certificates to their favourite froyo shop in town! Thank you Menchies!
